Interview With Sion Zaius

For those of you who haven’t been reading The Secondlife Newspaper, you missed an article with Sion Chicken creator, Sion Zaius.  In it he talks about the new lagless version 11 chickens and lag issues of previous chickens.

You can read the article here.

Our First Scarce Egg!!

We had our first scarce egg laid this morning.  I couldn’t wait for it to hatch to see the cute little all black chick, I named her Scarce Flame Pea.  She is doing well and enjoying some of the items mentioned earlier in this blog.  I took some pictures to share with everyone.  This first one is little Flame in one of the roasting pans Dahni made, she looks so cute sitting there.  As you can see, we need to let Flame Pea grow a bit before making a meal of her (LOL)

Scarce Chick_001

This next picture is little Scarce Flame Pea playing with a much shrunk wolf toy.  I made the wolf so small, I think that little Flame actually scares the wolf.

Scarce Chick_002

We are very excited and can’t wait to see her grow into a lovely young hen.  I am sure with her good looks she will be a Cock magnet….Rooster that is.  (grins)  I hope you will come out to our store and see her and also browse the products, eggs and occasionaly live chickens for sale.

The Idea That Started Me On This Sick, Sick Path of Humorous Builds

 Sion Raosting Pot Chicken Nest

IN EVERY POT CHICKEN NEST

When Herbert Hoover campaigned with his slogan,  “a chicken in every pot,” he never imagined how eager the li’l cluckers would be to jump right into the roasting pan.

Just rez this pot on the ground and sit back with a fork in hand and a napkin tied around your neck as you watch them head for the pot each night for a few hours of self-broiling rest.

I’ve already included the veggies so you’l have a well balanced meal.

The pot is copyable so you can rez enough for every chicken you have.. perfect for feeding armies or a few teenage boys.

One Twisted Chick

I’m having entirely too much fun at the expense of my poor chickens’ emotional well being.  I’ve been creating nests, coops, and toys no self-respecting chicken would be caught dead in.. well, maybe dead, actually.  But not alive, definately not alive.

I have soup bowls and roasting pots for the chickens to sleep in, a wolf toy for them to kick around, and a set of family portraits of chickens and eggs on the dnner table.

I’ll be posting again soon with info and descriptions of the items.

Update on our sionChickens

Hello all,

We have expanded our flock to include quite a few New Wave sionChickens, as well as a second generation Original Ancient (though I had to purchase that one, still waiting on my Originals to produce one).  We have two farms where we are raising the sionChickens and gathering the eggs they lay, and a nice new store to sell chickens, eggs, and various products like toys, coops, etc.

Once everything is ready for the Grand Opening, I will post the slurl here and send out many adds inworld.  It shouldn’t be too long now, and I know people will just love the different things Dahni has made for those who enjoy pampering their sionChickens.  We have been mixing the various roosters and hens to produce some very nice colored sionEggs, and they are all very reasonably priced.  Soon we will have some of the more desired almost whites and blacks, and if we are lucky we will soon have an Ancient, Rare or Scarce.  I keep hoping anyway.  I will post the location of the new store once we have everything set up and ready for the public, so keep checking back.

UPDATE: The New Store is OPEN!!  Here is the slurl- http://slurl.com/secondlife/Freydis/97/147/46

List of other helpful SionChicken fanatic’s blogs and sites

So, you have a nice little piece of property in Second Life and you have found out just how much fun it is to own ScionChickens whether for a pet or to raise, breed, and sell the scionEggs and scionChickens.  The only trouble is that you may not have any experience raising and taking care of chickens in real life, and as cute and fun as these scionChickens are, they need tender loving care because they can and will die.  Below you will find some more helpful information as well as links to other sites dedicated to sionChickens and the people who love having them.

This is from a notecard written by SL avatar Maryssa Skytower:

The Basics
* Chicks love to spend time with each other, however I would not recommend more than 8-10 within a 10m radius.
* Male adult roosters will kill each other. They must be separated by age 3%.
* You can have adult males and females in the same pens. (How else do you expect to get eggs? lol)
* A baby chick is all yellow. As time passes you will see the colors change in your chickens. A female will have a white body with colored tail feathers. A male will have a green body with colored tail feathers.
* A chicken will grow up to be the same color as the egg. The tail feathers will show this color.

Interactions
* To see the stats on a chicken click it and it will tell you the age, sex, fatigue, and hunger of a chicken. The sex is egg for female and anger for male.
*To rename a chicken click it and type name in open chat. I personally type name then click the chicken and hit enter. The chicken will tell you once it’s name has changed.
* To set a chicken to home click a chicken and type home in open chat. The chicken will tell you if it has been set to home.
* An egg can be renamed the same way as a chicken. Set the egg out, click the egg and type name . The egg will tell you once it has a new name
* Chickens will play in their pens if you put a ball in with them. It can be highly amusing to watch them kick a ball around. They will also kick an egg around if it is in there with them.
*Do not place a live chicken into your inventory as it will kill the chicken. If you have to transport a chicken please see below.

Egg Hatching
*An egg will hatch two hours after it is laid or set out. An egg from sion Zaius the creator will only take 15 minutes to hatch.
*Eggs version 9 or lower must be set out 6m or more apart or they will cancel each other out. Please be very careful when placing eggs out if you do not know what version they are.

Breeding
* A chicken will be able to reproduce between the ages of 4-6%.
* In order to reproduce there must be no more than 8 chickens total (including chicks) within a 10m radius. I personally prefer 20m.
* It can vary on how often your chickens will lay eggs and what colors the eggs will be. The mating pair can be from different owners but whoever owns the hen will own the eggs.
* A hen will lay an egg between 30-120 minutes after egg reaches 100%. A chicken will squat after the meter reads 100% and that is the period where it will lay an egg.
*A laid egg will come out copy/trans, in order to give it to someone you must remove the copy tag for next owner. Otherwise they will rezz an unfertilized egg which will immediately disappear.

Food
* Food bowls must be placed 10m apart or they will create lag and the chickens have a hard time eating. If you have hungry chickens placing more food bowls out is not the answer. You will just confuse the chickens.
* Troubleshooting for hungry chickens – Make sure all chickens have been clicked to home. Some people say that making sure the chickens and the food are set to the same group will help. If you have too many chickens in one area it will create problems as well.
* A chicken will take 4 days to starve and die.1 chicken will eat 1 food bowl in 1 week. If you have more chickens in an area then they will go through the food quicker. (common sense I know)
* A chicken will eat out of someone else’s food bowl, but they can only update through their owner’s food bowls. The chickens will starve if they cannot update since they are not eating.

Transportation
*If you cannot afford a transport box then you can wear a chicken on your body. Be prepared to lose your hair and fly around. In order to remove the chicken sit on something so you remain still, click it home, then drop the chicken (do not detach it as it will go into your inventory at the point.
* Transport boxes can be purchased from sion Zaius wither from his shop in Boardman or SLX. In order to use the box, set it out near the chicken you want to box then click it and it will box that chicken up. If there are alot of chickens in one area, move the chicken you want away from the others by editing it, then box it.
* A chicken cannot live in a box for more than 48 hours or it will die of dehydration. Please do not try to use the boxes as a birth control method.
* The boxes will update your chickens so it is possible to have a death from the boxes or an adult can turn into a chick. This is cause by lag.

Death
* Chickens can and will die. It can be very discouraging when this happens. Chickens can die for various reasons. Most commonly are hunger or bad updates (genetic defects).
* Healing Kits can be purchased from sion Zaius the creator but they will not revive every chicken.  Set the kit out near the chicken and click it. If it works the chicken will start moving immediately.

Oddities
* A black egg 0,0,0 is called a genetic defect. This chicken will kill any other chickens near it once it reaches maturity.  A null is a female with 0,0,0 that someone copied a chicken from an earlier revision. This null can breed but the colors will come from the father and not the mother.
* A golden rooster cannot die, does not need food, and will live twice as long as a regular chicken. They will kill another rooster however so please do not set two adult roosters in the same pen even if one is a gold.

Please IM me if you have any questions.

Sion Chicken accessories

Zanyrob’s Egginator 2000 – SionEgg collector and roost
slurl – Zanybob's Egginator 2000

This looks to be a quality product that might appeal to any Second Life  SionChicken farmer.  It is an attractive egg collector and roost that will hold up to six mating groups of Sionchickens.  The collector/roost is a bit high in the prim count at 110 prims, but if you are a serious SionChickenbreeder and seller, you will probably have the space and the prims to spare.  If you are looking for a less prim heavy but equally functional and good looking collector/roost, the same vender has a smaller version that is only 77 prims and holds up to four mating groups.  You will need a SionChicken Radi-o-static device to keep the SionEggs from hatching; but the beauty of this collector’s design is that one Radi-o-static device will work for the entire collector/roost.

The vender for Zanyrob’s Egginator 2000 can be found in Second Life at this slurl – http://slurl.com/secondlife/Indulge/144/161/23   And while you are there be sure to browse the entire Farmers Market for many other SionEggs, SionChickens, and accessories.

Bedtime For Bonzo-Chicken

the perfect place to relax

the perfect place to relax

I love seeing what people come up with to play with and house their chickens.  One of my favorites so far is a pose-blanket by Alora Jewell.  If you don’t know  who she is yet, you will.  Alora is the person behind the Chicken Orphanage group, the Chicken Lovers and Resellers group, and the Farmers’ Market for Sion chicken farmers (where Loki and I have a stall.. come buy and check it out.  We have eggs.  Lotsa eggs.)

As if this weren’t all enough, Alora has an adorable little shop all her own on a lovely, scenic sim.  Here she sells eggs, and a few really well done items for sion chicken farmers.   This is where I found the poseblanket.

Spoiled for choice

Spoiled for choice

With only three prims, this blanket will squeeze into any plot and can serve a a chicken coop for free range chickens.  At night, the chickens will seek it out to sleep on it.

It comes with multiple poses for at two people and comes in 11 different texture options.  The poses are animated and adorable.  At only $100L, it’s hard to go wrong.

Get on over there and get a blanket to cuddle your chicks with!

Sion’s V11 Offical Price Guide

The following is a copy of a notecard released by Sion Zaius on May, 24, 2009.

Hi all, wow what an update. Even if you thought you knew the value of eggs I bet you are confused now. I know I am and I am supposed to help you? Ha ha ha well ok, let’s see what we can figure out here.

There is no way to be able to come up with set prices or even standard or average prices at this time. What we do come up with now will also be totally outdated in a few days and again in 2 weeks.

So I will give you the information I can to help you understand what kind of egg you have and how to determine a price for it.

Ok the easiest to start with are older version eggs laid before the v10 update. Yes some people still sell them and they can be updated to v11. You should really take these off the market now. The risk of death updating them, and the problems they cause before they update, are just not worth the 20L or less people sell them for. Take some time and remove them from your sales list OR include a note with them telling people to contact you when they have problems and not Sion.

Older version eggs have been the target for many who undercut or really don’t care how their pricing affects the over all market. I still recommend a price of NO LESS than 25L each. Anything less and you are only wasting your time and making them have no value at all. It hurts everyone when you undercut. There is no way you can tell me that they are actually worth any less to have these amazing animals for your own. Let people know that the chickens overall are worth having and raise your price. Free items or very very cheap items are usually not worth the time it takes to buy them. These are !!

With the v10 eggs that we are currently using, we saw the same thing happen with undercutting and people who don’t care about the market prices, the chickens or the work that went into making these wonderful chickens. With over 4000 lines of scripts for the chickens alone, more scripts for eggs, food, boxes, healing kits and the time and frustration to put it all together and make it work AND deal with everyone who contacts Sion with questions or complaints, to have someone list an egg free of for 1L on the exchange is nothing less than a slap in the face to Sion in my opinion.

If you feel it is worth having chickens long enough for them to produce an egg that you are then able to sell and make money off of, even if you get them as adults, then you also feel they have some value. So if the lives have value then the eggs have a higher value in my opinion. The reason I say this is because of the joy, happiness, excitement and emotions they bring with them.

If you have ever hatched an egg and watched it grow and change each day, think about the value that brought to your time in SL. Why would anyone say that has no value at all? But when people in SL find new products, price dictates their first impression. Do you still go looking through free shops for things you want? Some charge 1L or 10L because so much of those products are only worth that little in their opinion.

You may feel it has a higher value to you so you buy it. That’s why we buy all products or hire all services. Because we feel they have value equal to or greater than the price we pay for them. Even if they are free. That is a buyer’s point of view. From a seller’s point of view, the price should always be equal or HIGHER than the value we place on items.

Market value is what one person is willing to sell something for and what another person is willing to pay. Do you honestly think that anyone who wants something is not willing to pay for it? So make them pay a reasonable amount and they will return to buy more.

That is true for every single product and service both in RL and in SL. The chickens and eggs should be the same. think like a salesperson if you intend to sell any product and you will be sucessful but don’t lose sight of the buyer’s perspective.

I could go on but I am sure you get my point. With this in mind and with the stable prices we have seen for the vast MAJORITY or reasonably priced eggs, and the update death rate lower on v10 than older versions, NO eggs should be priced at LESS than 50L.

We began the chickens with the original blue, green and red colours, with the new generations we began to see whole ranges of colours possible. To this day I have not seen any large number of any colour eggs and think it’s safe to say that very few people will have identical eggs for sale. Yours are not one of a kind but are very close to it. Every egg is.

The darker the shades, the longer they have been around. Each generation has become lighter and lighter. White has become the most valuable colour because it has been the longest to achieve. Each generation has taken the hatching of new coloured eggs, the cost of food for 2 weeks, the time and effort put into the care of the chickens, uploading costs for textures after they are made and all to sell one single egg. The value of breeder’s time and expenses can’t be set.

It’s invaluable. As more and more people find out about the chickens, the higher the demand for eggs has been. The prices should have been higher for each generation but we saw them drop instead. the rarer colours for these eggs are white, black and perfects or triples as some call them. White is 99, 99, 99 but because of the coding will hatch at 98, 98, 98. The closer to white your egg is, the higher the price whith a recommend price of 2500L for 99, 99, 99. the opposit is true for blacks. The closer to 01, 01, 01 your egg is, the more valuable it is. this egg has not yet been laid to the best of my knowledge.

The 0, 0, 0 full black egg was originally listed at 2500L but was devalued by a single person selling them for 50L each. because they are copy able eggs, this killed the market for the blacks and opened the door for others to sell for even less and make it valueless. That, sadly, is exactly what happened. Now with the V11 Scarce line the v10 update black will again have value. If you are selling v10 black eggs, raise your price. How high will be determined on demand for the Scarce.

The V10 lives can also update and adults don’t require a 2 week wait for return on your investment. Lives sould be higher priced than eggs by double the amount. So if you sell your egg for 50L each, the live adult with the same colour should be 100L. The prices you charge are for you to determine. Demand and personal desire from buyers will decide if you receive it.

V10 updated chickens laying V11 eggs. They will be Originals and they will all be one of a kind. Again I highly doubt you will see 2 of the excat same colour egg come up on the market at the exact same time. The possibility of this happening is very slim but not impossible. It is more likely you will see eggs laid that are the same as ones you already have.

Why would they be a higher value? Because there is no risk of death trying to update them. They don’t need to be updated. Also you will have to purchase sionChicken Egg Proteggtors for them to be boxed and sold. If that isn’t enough to make you want to raise your prices, think of the updates that were just released. How much would you pay for one pet with all the features they now have that are as realistic as they are and bring that much pleasure for that long to you? That’s your value.

I have seen pets in Sl that don’t even come close to comparing to these chickens go for 2000L each or more. I truly hope that I never see a V11 laid egg priced below 150L. I would like to see, and believe to be reasonable, prices above that for common colours. The closer to white, the higher the price. White is considered semi-rare as are blacks, so the closer to white or black, the higher the value up to about 1500L.

Scarce eggs will be excatly that. They are rares and should be priced as such with NO LESS than 2500L. These are for V11 laid Scarce not updated. Again the rarity of the colour will determine the final price.

Ancients are the eggs that will glow and are considered super rares. If 2 are mated together the glow will be even brighter and more valuable. Again these come in any colour so the rarity plue the rarity of the colours will determine the price. These eggs I will not try to put a minimum value on. If you go looking to buy one, have a full wallet.

Once we get to having eggs that come from our New Waves, the popularity of the Originals vs the Scarce vs the New Waves will determine price. The more popular and in demand race will be the higher priced or more valuable. Time will tell but for now can can’t determine a value.

Sion V11 Chicken Notes part 2

The following is a copy of a notecard released by Sion Zaius on May, 24, 2009.

Welcome to Part 2, you know I only did this so you couldn’t jump ahead to the new products and races of chickens without reading the rest first right?

Ok so where were we? Oh yes !! They have new wings !!! Oh, we already did that part? All right, all right, let’s get to the new stuff that’s been added.

These are all items that I have not used personally and have not been used on any wide scale. The information on them may not be 100% accurate or they may vary slightly upon release from the test models created. We will all learn more about them as we use them.
—————————————————–

The NEW sionChicken Proteggtor

V11 eggs taken into your inventory without being boxed first, WILL DIE. Since they are all one of a kind eggs now, it’s the same as taking a live chicken into your inventory. This box was specifically designed to save you time, effort and money AND to reduce the number of eggs availabe and keep their value reasonable.

To use this item, it is best to name your eggs first by using the same method as always to name eggs and chickens. Then simply drag your sionEgg box from your inventory to the ground, next to where the egg is you wish to box, and click the box.

It will automatically pick the closest egg belonging to you and box it up. So far it works exactly the same as the transport boxes we use for live chickens. You can now take your egg safely into your inventory to save, sell or give away.

Here is where things get different so please read this carefully.

Unlike transport boxes that can be reused, egg boxes are a one time use item. If you plan to sell your egg, simply set it for sale, or for the exchange (xstreet), drop it in your magic box the way it is IF YOU NAMED THE EGG FIRST.

There are no textures to make, no pictures of eggs to take, no upload charges and the box has the colour numbers in it’s name if you named the egg before you boxed it. The box will display a picture of the egg colour(s) inside, on the outside of the box. Perfect for selling or buying. The box will also tell you if your egg is a Scarce or not.

If you don’t name your egg with the colour number(s) before you box it, you will have to do it the hard way to sell on the exchange, or rezz it from invetory to see the colour(s). If you only sell in world, the eggs don’t need to be named, only for the exchange or inventory.

Once you click the box again to release the egg inside, the egg box will vanish. Each box can only be used once and will be very, very inexpensive to buy. ALL V11 eggs must be boxed unless you want them to hatch.
—————————————————-

The NEW sionChicken radi-O-static will be the hottest accessory on the market upon release and will come out with the V11 update.

This alien transmission radio emits Sionic waves of soothing sounds, from a world far from our own. These Sionic sounds can only be heard by sionChicken eggs and will lull your v11 eggs into a peaceful sleep. Your eggs will stay blistfully asleep until you arrive, to name them and box them up, WITHOUT hatching.

Designed specifically for those who are not able to separate land for auto return, these will quickly become the ultimate way to prevent eggs from hatching while you are away from your chickens. Simply rezz one in the middle of your pen or coop and any eggs laid within it’s 10 meter radius won’t hatch.

If you wish to set an egg out to hatch, simply take the radi-O-static back to inventory or move it further than 10 meters from the egg. Eggs will then hatch at their normal rate.
—————————————————–

Breeder Food Packs have now been released and are highly recommended for anyone with more than 20 – 25 chickens. These boxes of food come with 16 bowls of food each holding 300 servings. That’s equal to 32 regular bowls of food and are 25% less than the regular price to buy. These are not recommended for smaller breeders because of the cost and rate of consumption.

This food can NOT be sold as individual bowls and is intended for large breeders only. If you abuse this or take advantage of this by reselling smaller portions, it may be discontinued.
—————————————————–

The sionChicken Complete Guide journal and hud will not be relased yet. It will take too long to update all the changes and additions. Watch for this in the next few weeks.

The sionChicken Official Price Guide will be released with the V11 update release. This contains information to help you decide the best price to sell your eggs and live chickens for. It is intended to be used by new breeders, who really don’t know how to determine a price for their eggs, and by more experienced breeders for clarification on egg types and variations.

Upon the V11 release, it is impossible to determine an actual value for any chickens or eggs since there is no way of knowing which chickens and eggs will be the most in demand. This guide will show a recommended minimum starting price for each variety and explain how to determine how valuable your egg is.

Simply look up the type of egg you have, read the notes on basics and rares for that type and the base price, then calculate a price based on what you feel is fair. Within a few days, this guide will become useless and outdated. Once prices stabilize, a new guide will be written based on the current market.

sionChicken vendors are ready for release and will make it easier and more convenient for resellers to supply their customers with sionChicken accessories and supplies.

To request that one be placed in your shop, please drop a note card to Pete Perkins. Include a slurl to the location where you want the vendor and mark the spot on the wall with a plywood box of some kind. He will come as he has time to set it up for you.
—————————————————-

OK now that should be enough of an update to get everyone excited about their even more wonderful updated chickens and the time they spend with them. So I will be off then to play with mine. See you soon.

What? You want more? Oh my !! Now you just sound like me. I am constantly asking for more with the chickens. Sion will mute me soon and ban me from his land. You just watch and see if he doesn’t. LOL

So now we have our “Originals” which are the same chickens we have had all along with all these amazing updates and new features and cool stuff, PLUS we have our “Scarce” race of beautiful blacks with wonderfully coloured tails who have all the same features, updates and cool stuff AND can mate for the first time ever.

The fun does not stop there though. Sion, as you already know, is totally amazing and creative. I can say that because he isn’t here to argue. He also likes to have fun too and has a wicked sense of humour. Anyway he decided to add even more fun and excitement by releasing ultra rares called the “Ancients”.

The Ancients will occur once in every 300 eggs or so laid but can come in any colour AND THEY GLOW !!! (I think they were dropped in radioactive alien sludge or something) If you get an Ancient or someone you know hatches one, you have to see it. Put your environment settings to midnight and watch as it lights up the dark.

If you mate an Ancient with another Ancient, the egg that is laid will be even brighter. The Ancients mated with non Ancients will lay a dimmer version each generation it mates with non Ancients until the eggs no longer have any glow left. To revitalize Ancients, just find another Ancient to mate them with. The eggs laid will once again glow very bright.

Ancients can be laid by either Originals or by New Waves and again, can only mate with chicken of the same race as them. Obviously the value of these eggs will be the highest on the market. Their colours and race will determine just how high that value is.

Ok is that enough now? Oh you want to know what the NEW WAVES are I keep mentioning but have never explained? Well that’s easy, the New Waves are a brand spanking new race of multi coloured chickens.

Each New Wave chicken will have 2 different constrasting colours and not just coloured tails. They have new wings !!!! Their wings will be one colour and their tails will be a different colour. Now imagine that on a Scarce Ancient. Especially if white is one of the colours. That’s impressive but they are impressive in any colour.

The New Waves are my favourite ones now. Even as much as I love the Originals, I can’t wait to see the colours made by 2 New Waves when they are old enough to mate. Raising and breeding New Waves requires a brand new start from scratch with eggs in the original 1st and 2nd generation colours.

These are the only eggs that are found in Sion’s starter packs and will be the only eggs sold by him for at this time. He will no longer sell Originals so all Originlas must be purchased from resellers who carry the Original race of chickens. The very first New Wave eggs will be laid around the 13th of June or so and their value will be determined closer to that date based on their popularity.
=============================

OK have you got enough to keep you happy for a while yet? I haven’t, but then again I never do when it comes to these totally wonderful and amazing creatures, or their creator, Sion Zaius.

On a more personal note to Sion: You have really outdone yourself this time hun and I am so happy for you that you are, once again, excited about your sionChickens. These past few days, watching you bounce around like a small child on Christmas morning, has been absolutely delightful to watch.

I couldn’t imagine a way that you could improve them this much in 10 updates, let alone a single one, but you have. Even if you do make me work my butt off retyping things over and over again. Way To Go hun !!! And from the very deepest part of my heart, thank you.

Now watch him edit all that out before he releases it. LOL

Enjoy your babies, I know you will. Be safe until next time.
